엄마, meaning “mother” in Korean, is a conceptual exploration that visualizes the predestined bond between mother and child—especially the mother–daughter relationship—through the lens of the red string theory.

Rooted in Chinese lore, the red string theory suggests that an invisible thread connects those destined to meet or become significant in one another’s lives. Though the string may stretch or tangle, it will never break. This concept is applied to the mother–daughter relationship, exploring its ambivalence, dynamics, challenges, and beauty across different stages of life. The project consists of a 3-part series: a moving poster, a microscopic analysis, and an interactive paper archive.

The 3-part series:

  • A moving poster depicting the life of an average woman through mesh and string-like forms.

  • A microscopic analysis of a knitted composition.

  • An interactive, growing paper archive of personal stories about mothers and children.
